Most of the protesters want to stop giving money to companies that help Israel in the war in Gaza.
On Wednesday at UCLA, people were told to leave by the announcements or they would be taken away by the police. The protesters mostly stayed where they were and kept shouting support for Palestine.
UCLA announced that on Thursday and Friday, all classes will be taught online because there will be limited activities on campus.
The leader of California was upset that the police took too long to stop a fight at UCLA between two groups who have different beliefs about Israel and Palestine. One group hurt the other group before the police came.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay that the police took too long to help.
The police took away people who were supporting Palestine from Columbia University.
Officials and university leaders say that security guards were quickly sent to the area where people were protesting in support of Palestine after fighting broke out on Tuesday night. Some people who saw what happened said that the security guards took too long to arrive, and there was a short period of time when nobody was there to help.
Trump said that protests on college campuses are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th. Meanwhile, Biden is trying to make peace in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police didn’t move from the edge of the lawn even when we asked them for help by shouting.
The people who were upset started to go home two hours after the bad thing happened, and the police took charge on Wednesday.
Governor Newsom said that violence is not okay. People can speak their minds, but they can’t encourage others to be violent or break the law.
He said those who did something wrong should be punished, like being put in trouble by the police or kicked out of school. According to a story in the Los Angeles Times, there were not enough UCLA police officers at the event and they had to leave because there were too many people causing trouble.
The newspaper said that more police officers were asked to come help from other places like California and Los Angeles. It took three hours for them to make things better.
Columbia University has stopped some students from protesting.
A big fight happened at a famous school in the US late at night, right after the police kicked out some students who were protesting at another school in New York.
The protests at Columbia about what’s happening in Gaza have led to similar demonstrations at other colleges in the United States.
Many people, including students at many different kinds of schools, are protesting in over 25 states. They want schools to stop doing business with Israel and companies that are making money from the war.
The university officials said they had a lot of security to keep things safe, but they didn’t want to stop the mostly peaceful protests. On Tuesday, a big group of people supporting Israel came to campus in black clothes and masks and tried to take down the barriers.
The people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with smelly spray, and ripped down their signs and boards.
College leaders are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because these protests are happening in more and more places across the country.
Kids, some people who support the Palestinians took over Columbia University. The Mayor of New York City said that some of the people causing trouble were not from the school.
